The Ensemble Theatre Honored With The Theatre Longevity Award At National Black Film Theatre Festival
The Ensemble Theatre has long been a center for the history, culture, and artistic expression of African American theatre arts in the City of Houston. Founded by George Hawkins in 1976, The Ensemble Theatre has grown to become a beacon of Black excellence and a focal point of Black history in the making, not only in the City of Houston, but across the Nation. That is the very legacy that was awarded at this year’s 2022 National Black Theatre Festival.
Houston Chamber Choir presents This Is Why I Sing to open 23rd season on Sept. 29
Houston Chamber Choir’s 23rd Season opens with a concert that illustrates the joy of musicians, highlighting our singers’ favorite pieces. These are the compositions that remind us why we love to sing. This will be an evening of “the best of the best” by composers like Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre and Bob Chilcott, along with John Tavener and Arvo Pärt. The Kinder HSPVA Chorale, under the direction of Shannon Carter, and the Parker Elementary School Advanced Chorus, under the direction of Marianna Parnas-Simpson, will be our featured guests as they present pieces that have kindled their youthful love for singing. The evening will end with a glorious performance featuring all three choirs singing together.

Additionally, BGCGH hosted a Special Session via Zoom with community partners, staff and board members, including Ericka Brown, M.D.; Coca-Cola representatives and special guest speaker David Persse, M.D., Health Authority for the Houston Health Department, to discuss issues around safely reopening Boys & Girls Clubs for in-person programming this week.

Today, Culture of Health Advancing Together (CHAT) held a special celebration and ribbon cutting event to unveil the new Gulfton-area murals titled “Together We Play” and “All Hands In.” Event speakers included Council Member Edward Pollard, CHAT Executive Director Dr. Aisha Siddiqui, and Amer Kumar, Vice President of Ashford Communities, as well as artists Amy Malkan and Thaddaeus Arvie. Funding Will Benefit Children Participating in Houston PARKS Adventure
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department has received a $40,000 grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Community Outdoor Outreach Program (CO-OP). These funds will enable around 3,400 inner city youth to participate in Houston PARKS Adventure, a collaborative, community-based program that promotes nature education, conservation, and outdoor recreation through innovative and affordable programming designed to spark their interest in nature-based activities.

EPA Releases Superfund Redevelopment Focus List; Includes MDI Site in Houston
Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its initial list of Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) sites with the greatest expected redevelopment and commercial potential. The list includes the Many Diversified Interests, Inc., (MDI) site in Houston, a former foundry that was removed from the NPL in 2010.
