A study at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has shown promise for effective treatment of therapy-resistant cancers caused by a mutation of the RAS gene found in many cancers. The pre-clinical study combined therapies targeting the inhibitors polyADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK). The findings were published this week in Science Translational Medicine.

A major shortage in the behavioral health workforce means that many area children and teenagers experiencing trauma and loss—especially in Houston’s Hispanic community—are not getting the personal attention and care they deserve. Thanks to a collaboration between the Trauma and Grief Center at the Hackett Center for Mental Health, the Lucine Center for Trauma and Grief, and the University of Houston Downtown’s (UHD) College of Public Service, that’s about to change.

New findings from researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center about how some cancer cells become “addicted” to glucose could open up fresh approaches to therapy strategies for cancers with high levels of an amino acid transporter called solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11). This includes lung cancer and renal cell carcinoma, the most common type of kidney cancer.
