Texas Heart Institute (THI) and Fit Houston announced a partnership to promote #WALK30, a new health campaign that combines Texas Heart Institute’s industry-leading research, thought leadership, education, and patient care with Fit Houston’s strategy for a community wellness movement across Houston’s neighborhoods. The movement launched with the community fit walk #WALK30 on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at Arthur Storey Park.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo and political party leaders clashed over Texas’s anti-sanctuary city law at a town hall assembled by Houston Public Media partnering with Univision. Panelists debated current state and federal policies that affect the Houston Latino community, including SB4, also known as the “sanctuary cities” bill, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
Family Houston Young Professionals Host First Happy Hour
Family Houston’s Young Professionals Board of Directors recently hosted their first happy hour at Fuego’s Saloon. The event brought in over 40 attendees where guests were able to mingle with the Young Professionals Board, staff, and Family Houston’s very own Board of Directors. The event was sponsored by Verisei Consulting and $1,176 was raised throughout the night. Thank you to everyone who came out and made the event a success!
Houston School Districts Buck Trends In Hiring of Black Teachers
Houston Chronicle reports Houston ISD and a majority of Houston-area districts are bucking national trends when it comes to the hiring of African-American teachers. About 36.2 percent of teachers in Houston ISD are black, compared with about 7 percent nationwide and 10 percent in Texas.
Astros Foundation and PGA TOUR announce five-year partnership for the Houston Open
The PGA TOUR, the Astros Foundation and its Board of Directors, led by Astros Owner & Chairman Jim Crane, announced a five-year partnership for the Houston Open beginning with the 2019 event. The Astros Foundation will operate the event and serve as the host organization.

AARP Texas Survey: Voters 50+ to Decide Houston’s Next Mayor
A new survey commissioned by AARP Texas revealed that 84% of registered voters who are 50-plus will “very likely” vote in the 2023 Houston Mayoral election. The survey also revealed that 89% of those polled want Houston’s next top city leader to address crime and safety, calling those issues “top priorities” for this powerful voting bloc. Another 75% said jobs and the economy are essential to them. These issues will likely influence voting behavior at the polls in city elections this coming November.
