Complaints Allege Amazon Illegally Fired Drivers Based On Overly Stringent Background Checks
A group of eight Black and Latino former Amazon drivers filed class action complaints this morning with the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), charging that Amazon illegally discriminated against them and other similarly-situated drivers when it fired them last year. The complaints allege that Amazon’s mass termination of predominantly minority drivers was based on an overly stringent background check policy that included old and minor offenses, and came months after the drivers were on the job and performing successfully.

Hire Houston Youth Provides 5,000 Jobs for 2017
Mayor Sylvester Turner and partners kicked off the application period for the second year of Hire Houston Youth at a breakfast at the McDonalds on Studemont at I-10. Utilizing public/private partnerships, Hire Houston Youth will provide jobs and internships to Houston youth between the ages of 16 to 24 at an hourly wage of $8. In the past, the city helped place only about 450 kids in summer jobs. This year, there will be 5,000 positions available.
Mayor Turner asks Houston Companies to Hire Houston Youth
With the March 27 deadline to sign up just around the corner, Mayor Sylvester Turner called on Houston corporations and nonprofits to join his Hire Houston Youth (HHY) summer jobs program. The mayor has set a goal of providing 5,000 jobs for Houston youth this summer. As of today, there are pledges from companies for just 3,000 positions.

Emmy Award-winning actor Robert Guillaume, best known as the title character in the TV sitcom “Benson,” died Tuesday. He was 89. His wife Donna Brown Guillaume told the Associated Press he died at their Los Angeles home of complications of prostate cancer. Guillaume often played acerbic, dry-witted, but ultimately lovable characters like the butler Benson Du Bois, which he created on the 1977 series “Soap,” before his character was spun off in 1979. Guillaume won Emmys both for “Soap” (as supporting actor) and “Benson” (as lead actor).
