Mitchell retired from the House Small Business Committee as Chairperson, it kind of marked the end of great legislation relative to small and minority business procurement and investment. Fortunately, the Honorable Tim Scott, Black Republican senator from South Carolina had a vision and has made it a reality. The Opportunity Zone Program, officially the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is now law and quite active.

Today, presidential candidate Tom Steyer released a proposal that would provide working families with a 10% tax cut that benefits 95% of all Americans. To rebalance the economy and help out the millions of families that need help with the basic necessities, the plan calls for an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and a $2 trillion infrastructure plan to provide good-paying long-term jobs.

Shh! It’s against the law to talk back to your teacher in Texas. Effective September 1, 2019, Texas Legislatures’ new law will intensify the school-to-prison pipeline cycle. This vague and discretionary law, Senate Bill 2432, will allow administrators to refer students to alternative disciplinary education programs if an employee perceives harassment from a student. According to the Texas Penal Code 42.07, harassment includes intent to harass, annoy, alarm, abuse, torment, or embarrass a person by phone, electronic communications and/or online posts.

Today, following the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to advance diversity and opportunity in higher education, the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division are jointly releasing two resources to help colleges and universities understand the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina et al. (collectively “SFFA”). These resources will help colleges and universities as they work to lawfully pursue efforts to achieve a student body that is diverse across a range of factors, including race and ethnicity.
UMHB Fall Commencement 2021
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor held commencement services for the Fall 2021 semester on Friday, Dec. 3, at the Bell County Expo Center. This was the university's 165th graduating class, and a total of 417 students were awarded degrees, including 333 baccalaureate degrees, 45 master's degrees, and 39 doctoral degrees.
