Harmony Public Schools Awarded $27.8 Million U.S. DOE Grant For Campus Leadership Program
“Great teachers deserve to be treated as the professionals they are and to be compensated accord- ingly,” U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said in a statement Wednesday, September 1. “All too often, though, they lack access to relevant pro- to rethink all of that, and they have risen to the chal- lenge.” The new funding brings the total amount awarded to Harmony by the Department of Education within the past few years to $92.5 million. • In 2012, the DOE awarded Harmony a $30 million Race to the Top grant to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and edu- cator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers. • In 2016, the DOE awarded Harmony a $26.7 mil- lion Teacher Incentive Fund grant to develop a merit-based system for rewarding its highest-per- forming teachers. (The system, known as H-STEP, was foundational in Harmony being named to the Texas Education Agency’s inaugural class of Teacher Incentive Allotment districts in Fall 2020.) • In 2018, the DOE awarded Harmony an $8 million Education Innovation Research grant to build upon Harmony’s project-based learning STEM model for Grade 6-12 students by introducing similar curricula to students in Grade K-5, and by creating a system of support and professional development for elementary school teachers. Harmony Public Schools is a Texas-born, Texas-wide public charter school system with cam- puses serving PreK-Grade 12 students in 23 cities across the state, including Greater Houston, DFW, San Fatih Ay – CEO/Superintendent, Harmony Schools Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Waco, Lubbock, Odessa, Bryan, Beaumont, and the Rio Grande Valley. For many of us, November is the month of Thanksgiving and the beginning of the holiday season. It is a time when people gather with family and friends to express gratitude and appreciation for the good things in their lives. Families celebrate Thanksgiving as one of the few days of the year they are blessed to have so many loved ones under the same roof. Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans Day of Service
Today, the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans (AAMA) will host a special Day of Service in honor of legacy civic leaders Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Students and staff from AAMA’s two George I. Sanchez Charter Schools will volunteer at both Houston campuses to update on-site murals, stain a back fence, pick up trash on the property, mulch and trim bushes, among various other beautification projects. The one-day service event is intended to honor the memory and legacy of Chavez and Huerta ahead of this year’s Cesar Chavez Day on March 31, 2022 and Dolores Huerta Day on April 10, 2022. AAMA is a leading Latino-serving nonprofit organization in the city of Houston with over 50 years of service across the state of Texas.

Professor of Art at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) for 47 years and Project Row Houses Co-Founder Floyd Newsum is presenting his first large-scale retrospective, Evolution of Sight, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in Madison, Wisconsin, from May 20 through October 8, 2023. The exhibition is organized by guest curators Dr. Lauren Cross, Gail-Oxford Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts at The Huntington in San Marino, California, and Mark Cervenka, UHD Professor of Art and O’Kane Gallery Director.
