Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ademola “Peter” Adejokun, Rolando Rubiano, and Kiran Shah to the Texas Board of Professional Engineers for terms set to expire on September 26, 2023. The board licenses qualified engineers and regulates the practice of professional engineering.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston announces that the team from Houston Texans Teen Club was named the winner of the Building Industry Leaders (BIL) Urban Plan competition, a program of the Urban Land Institute and funded by a grant from retail electricity provider Reliant. Each of the five team members who created the winning case study received a $1,000 scholarship toward future education. Other teams participating in the competition included the Morefield Club, Galveston Island Teen Club and the Allen Parkway Club participated.

While the doors to locations may have been closed due to COVID-19, the YMCA of Greater Houston continues serving and strengthening its communities, demonstrating the Y always has been and continues being more than just a gym. The nonprofit is offering child care for essential workers; operating more than 20 food distributions sites; providing virtual exercise and education classes, teen programs, senior programs, international services and more.

Texas Southern University has been designated as the official depository of records from the Texas NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). A special presentation was held August 17 in the University’s Robert J. Terry Library. The collection consists of minutes, newspaper clippings, legal documents, brochures, Freedom Banquet programs and photographs, along with digitized images from individual Texas NAACP branches.

Things were heighten even more when Houston Texans’ owner Bob McNair added fuel to the fire with his commentary made at a NFL only owners meeting, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison,” referencing the NFL players as “inmates.”
El Dorado Boulevard Widening Open Comment Period
Houston City Council Member Dave Martin and the City of Houston Public Works and Engineering Department (PWE) hosted a public input meeting on November 29, 2017 to discuss proposed alignment options and gather input from the surrounding communities for the El Dorado Boulevard Widening Project. The scope of work includes the expansion of the current two lane roadway to four lanes on El Dorado Boulevard, from Clear Lake City Boulevard to Horsepen Bayou.

The Town Center Park activities will begin at 2:00 p.m., however the Houston Zoo's ZooMobile will not arrive until 4:30 p.m. with an expected departure time of 6:30 p.m.

This performance has been cancelled due to the weather. Performing Arts Houston presents the return of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (the Trocks) as part of their 50th anniversary tour, on January 23, 2024, at Jones Hall. The all-male ballet company founded in 1974 will perform parodies of classical ballets Swan Lake and Paquita, as well as Yes Virginia, Another Piano Ballet, all performed en pointe.

The Houston Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated presented 31 outstanding debutantes and seven stags to society at its 29th Biennial Debutante Ball at the Hilton Americas — Houston on Sunday, January 1, 2017. The president of the Houston Chapter is Mrs. Lisa Harris. Ms. Connie L. Cochran served as chairman and Mrs. Annette Bracey, Mrs. Erica Craven Fazande, Dr. Jocelyn Greely, and Ms. Colette Loeb served as co-chairmen. Melinda Spaulding, news anchor for KRIV Fox 26, and Dr. Austin Lane, president of Texas Southern University served as masters of ceremony. As each debutante was introduced to society, she was promenaded around the dance floor where she thanked her mother with a long stemmed red rose before performing sophisticated waltzes with her escort and father. Each stag was escorted by his mother as he was presented.
