Houston Selected as Finalist for Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge
Bloomberg Philanthropies recently announced that Houston has been chosen as one of the 17 finalist cities to receive grants of up to $1 million each as part of the prestigious Public Art Challenge. This program, launched in 2014, supports temporary public art projects that address urgent civic issues.
Superintendent: HISD will require masks for students and staff on the first day of school
Houston ISD announced the district will implement a mask mandate for the 2021-2022 school year. According to HISD Superintendent Millard House II, the board will support mandating masks at the beginning of the school year. House voiced his concerns about students wearing masks as the number of COVID-19 cases rises due to the delta variant.

Stories of Survival Tour Launches in Houston as part of Hurricane Harvey Peoples’ Tribunal
Hurricane Harvey’s impact on Houston - one of the nation’s largest petrochemical complexes - is still being felt today. To elevate the stories of those directly impacted and amplify community driven solutions to climate fueled disasters, a collaborative of organizations is launching the Stories of Survival Tour one year after the storm made landfall, August 25th, 2018 at NuWaters Co-op (2320 Elgin Street in the 3rd Ward) from 6pm - 10pm. The evening will include solar powered film screenings, a free community dinner, participatory storytelling, and music by the Houston-based international music collective Free Radicals.
