The Family Wellness Check-In Program, implemented by Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston (BGCGH) in mid-March, has yielded valuable information for the nonprofit to better assist Club families during the COVID-19 health crisis. BGCGH staff began checking in with Club families via phone calls the week of March 16, focusing on immediate needs related to shelter, food and medical care. To date, 5,241 families have been contacted, with more than 1,000 families to be called in the coming week.

Mayor Sylvester Turner this week announced an innovative alliance between bp and Uber to explore the planning, development, and deployment of bp’s rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs in Hous- ton to help drivers on Uber’s platform make the transition to electric vehicles. Aspiring to be an anchor institution for Houston, the University of Houston-Downtown was recently awarded $2,470,225 by the U.S. Department of Commerce to upgrade the UHD bilingual e-library in support of connectivity and literacy skills of the Hispanic community. Additionally, this project will have a dramatic impact on workforce development and, ultimately, the local economy, as the City of Houston seeks to increase the literacy skills of Houstonians by one level. The benefits of this project will extend beyond Houston since access to the bilingual e-library will be available worldwide.
