Directs Select Services To Reopen, Closes Schools For Remainder Of Academic Year
Governor Greg Abbott today held a press conference where he issued three new Executive Orders to begin the process of reopening the state of Texas while revising hospital capacity and certain social distancing guidelines. Within the orders, select activities and services that pose minimal to no threat of spreading COVID-19 are allowed to reopen using a "Retail-To-Go" model, certain restrictions on surgeries have been loosened, and schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year.

James Beard Foundation Announces the James Beard Foundation Food and Beverage Investment Fund for Black and Indigenous
In acknowledgement of the immeasurable contributions the Black and Indigenous communities have made to the modern American foodscape, the James Beard Foundation announced today the James Beard Foundation Food and Beverage Investment Fund for Black and Indigenous Americans, a new grant initiative to provide financial resources for food or beverage businesses that are majority-owned by Black or Indigenous individuals. The initiative is a component of the organization’s Open For Good campaign launched in April to rebuild an independent restaurant industry that is stronger, more equitable, more sustainable, and more resilient post-pandemic.

Last year in this space, I sought to honor the sacrifices of Martin Luther King Jr. by focusing on some of the gains made by the black community since Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act (1964) and the Voting Rights Act (1965). As part of the academic community, I celebrated the increases in high school and college graduation rates. Also, during the same period since the 1960s, the poverty rates decreased because of measurable gains in median household incomes.
