Governor Abbott Appoints Three To Texas Commission On Law Enforcement
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Kim Lemaux, Sharon Thomas and Timothy Whitaker to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for terms set to expire on August 30, 2021. As a state regulatory agency, TCOLE was established to enforce and institute standards to ensure the people of Texas are served by highly trained and ethical law enforcement, corrections, and telecommunications personnel.

Memorial Park Conservancy and project partners at Houston Parks and Recreation Department, the Kinder Foundation and the Uptown Development Authority are unveiling the Clay Family Eastern Glades, the first major project of the 2015 Memorial Park Master Plan and the associated Ten-Year Plan announced in 2018. Located north of Memorial Drive between Memorial Park Golf Course and Crestwood Drive, the transformed 100-acre area features picnic areas, native wetlands, savanna, pine-hardwood forest, wide open green spaces, and miles of accessible trails for Houstonians to enjoy. Eastern Glades will be open to the public this weekend and can be easily accessed from a parking lot with bike racks along the Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail and a pedestrian plaza at the intersection of Crestwood Drive and Blossom Street, as well as by vehicle or public transport at the intersection of Memorial Drive and East Memorial Loop Road.

On September 30, 2005, 14-year-old ShaQuanda Cotton attempted to enter a school building to take a prescribed medication before classes began. An encounter with a teacher’s aide on her way to the nurse’s office that morning led to her arrest, and months later the teen was adjudicated delinquent by a Lamar County court for assault on a public servant. What began as an ordinary day at school resulted in her being removed from the care of her mother and sentenced to an indeterminate term of up to seven years in a Texas juvenile detention facility. Cotton, now 30, recently published a personal account of the ordeal after years of being subjected to rumors and vitriol in the small town of Paris, Texas.
