Air Force Maj. Robert Lawrence Jr., America’s 1st Black Astronaut, Honored by Kennedy Space Center
America’s first Black astronaut received a long overdue honor earlier this month, 50 years after his tragic death. Air Force Maj. Robert Lawrence Jr., a trailblazer who opened a door for people of color in STEM, was honored on Dec. 8 for his contributions to space exploration at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Los Angeles Times reported. Hundreds of people gathered at the center to commemorate him, including NASA dignitaries, astronauts, Omega Psi Phi fraternity members, and schoolchildren.

Doctoral Student Selected to Present Research in Hawaii
Tammy D. Lane, M.S., educational leadership doctoral candidate in the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education and the scholarship coordinator in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, has been selected to present research in Hawaii. Based on a peer-reviewed process, her proposal submission, “Higher Education at the Intersection of Ethnicity/Race and Queerness at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIS)”, was accepted for presentation at the 16th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Education (HICE) to be held from January 4, 2018 to January 7, 2018 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu Hawaii. “HICE is coined as “the gathering place” due to the vast representation of educational leaders from countries around the world gathering to share a wealth of knowledge and perspectives,” said Lane.

The app, which is essentially in its beta release, has gained traction globally with no marketing. The app is free and encourages people who are likely targeted by police officers to know the full extent of their rights and how to navigate these situations.

Bacardi to Acquire Patrón Tequila In $5.1 Billion Deal
Global spirits giant Bacardi Limited will acquire Patrón Spirits International AG, maker of the popular Patrón tequila, at an enterprise value of $5.1 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2018. It will enable Bacardi to add an additional brand-name liquor to a roster that already includes Grey Goose vodka, Dewar’s Scotch whiskey and a fleet of eponymous rums.
