Houston Homeownership to Get $6.1 Million Boost
Wells Fargo & Company, NeighborWorks® America and its local network members today announced the NeighborhoodLIFT® program will expand for Houston with a $6.1 million commitment by Wells Fargo to boost local homeownership. NeighborWorks America network members Avenue, Fifth Ward CRC and Tejano Center will administer the $15,000 down payment assistance grants, determine eligibility and provide homebuyer education.

The Texas Coalition of Black Democrats today joined eighteen elected state Democratic officials from Harris County and the Houston Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. in requesting that Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg and County Attorney Vince Ryan investigate the presence of a phantom candidate in the March 3rd Democratic Primary for House District 142, including empaneling a grand jury to do so, if needed.
44th Annual Jazz & Poetry Black History Celebration
Jazz & Poetry, Houston’s premier Educational Outreach Program dedicated to introducing and inspiring school aged youth through poetry and Jazz performances- celebrating Black History Month, will close out its 44th season at Parker Elementary school this Wednesday, February 22. The 45-minute performance is scheduled to begin at 8:15 A.M. and will delight hundreds of students. Nearly 20,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® (AKA) – from all over the world – will converge on Houston from July 6-12 for its biennial conference. Led by International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, L.H.D., attendees will engage in service projects as well as leadership training and development. The conference will be held at the George R. NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis File Brief Urging Immediate End to Wealth-Based Bail for People Charged with Misdemeanors in Harris County
The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis filed an amicus brief in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas in support of a preliminary injunction to immediately halt Harris County’s practice of jailing people charged with misdemeanors solely because they are unable to pay bail.
TSU student awarded BeyGOOD Homecoming scholarship
Jordan Davis, a senior Healthcare Administration major at Texas Southern University is one of eight recipients of the 2018-2019 BeyGOOD Homecoming Scholars Award. He will receive a scholarship totaling $25,000. Davis participates in Habitat for Humanity and is a member of TSU Honors College Enrichment, Urban Gardening, Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and is a Young Life Christian Fellowship counselor. He plans to start a home health-care business after graduation.

City of Houston and Bezos Academy Open Fourth Preschool in South Houston
Community members, elected officials and Bezos leadership joined Mayor Turner to celebrate the grand opening of Houston’s fourth Bezos Academy location, located within the New Hope Housing Reed Family Center in South Houston. OneStar Foundation recently announced that it has awarded $550,000 in funding to support Teach For America’s programs in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio over the next three years. This grant is part of $32.7 million that Texas received in federal AmeriCorps funding from AmeriCorps, formerly known as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
