‘Hidden Figures’ Tops ‘Rogue One,’ With $22.8M #1 Debut at Box Office
With the always present caveat that “rank doesn’t matter,” it turns out that Hidden Figures was the top movie of the weekend, not Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As you probably know, the weekend box office that everyone reports on Sunday is comprised of estimates and when the rankings are close the order can sometimes shift when the final numbers drop. So yeah, Hidden Figures earned a terrific $22.8 million, about $1m more than estimated, which is a sign that the film is building on its buzz and word-of-mouth.

Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Files Intervention on Behalf of Students to Defend Diversity and Promote Inclusive Access at UT-Austin
Today, the national Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee) and pro bono counsel, Hunton Andrews Kurth, LLP, and Bernabei & Kabat, PLLC, filed a petition in State District Court of Travis County, Texas to intervene in a lawsuit brought by Ed Blum and his anti-affirmative action group, Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA), against the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin) (SFFA v. UT-Austin). Filed on May 16, 2019—on the eve of the 65th anniversary of Brown v. Board—this latest attack follows two prior, failed challenges by Blum in both federal and state courts to eliminate UT-Austin’s individualized consideration of race in its admissions program.

A $100 million racial discrimination lawsuit has been filed in a Houston, Texas state district court on behalf of hundreds of Black present and former employees of the Houston Community College (“HCC”). The suit was intentionally filed Friday, June 19, 2020– “Juneteenth—the anniversary date that Black slaves in Texas learned they had been freed from slavery two years earlier by President Abraham Lincoln.

Richard Collins III was murdered in an alleged hate crime at a bus stop outside of the University of Maryland's campus by an individual with ties to a white supremacist group, Alt-Reich. The defendant’s evidence of racial animus will be a critical focal point during the prosecution. 2nd Lt. Collins died days before his graduation from Bowie State University.
