Wells Fargo is providing $2.5 million to help expand the Local Initiatives Support Corporation’s (LISC) Financial Opportunity Centers (FOCs) to help underemployed workers in 15 metro areas over the next three years. The grant is expected to help provide employment and training services to more than 26,000 people, with a particular focus on helping build the skills needed to advance in key local industries such as information technology and healthcare. Houston is among the selected markets to receive the grant.

Houston’s own, Mia K. Wright, co-pastor and director of ministry at The Fountain of Praise, a 20,000-member megachurch, has been selected to serve as a keynote speaker at Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 68th International Conference, which will kick-off in Houston this week. Wright will speak at the Ecumenical Worship Service on Sunday, July 10, 2018 from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Kurt Carr and The Kurt Carr Singers will be guest musical artists. The Ecumenical/Worship Service is open to the public, so attendees don’t have to be registered for the conference to attend.

Black Restaurant Week, LLC, hosts its campaign in Houston. The national culinary and cultural campaign celebrates the flavors of African American, African, and Caribbean cuisine with a regional showcase in Houston. Black Restaurant Week is also celebrating six years of service. Since 2015, Black Restaurant Week has developed its multi-city culinary movement of community and culture as it relates to supporting black-owned businesses and talent within the food and beverage industries. The palate-pleasing showcase begins in Houston from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, March 21.

Houston Food Bank Unveils New and Expanded Keegan Kitchen to Provide More Nutritious Meals to Children

More children living with uncertainty about whether they’ll have enough nutritious food to eat will be fed thanks to the Houston Food Bank and its new, state-of-the-art production kitchen. Construction is complete on the new 10,000 square-foot Keegan Kitchen, housed within the Food Bank’s headquarters/warehouse east of downtown. Production of nutritious hot meals for delivery to school-aged children at after-school and summer program sites is underway.
