Grant-funded breast cancer screening, wrap-around services available through Texas Southern University
Texas Southern University is now providing breast cancer screening, among other services, for African American and other ethnic minority women in Harris, Grimes, Matagorda, Walker, and Wharton counties, as part of a grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The $1 million grant, which TSU secured in fall 2021, also provides patient navigation/barrier reduction services, and evidence-based culturally appropriate breast cancer awareness and education services for a population that has traditionally been underserved and at higher risk for breast cancer.

The Harris County Commissioners Court has appointed Chris Hollins as Harris County Clerk, replacing Dr. Diane Trautman after her recent resignation. Hollins’s term begins on June 1, and he will remain in office through 2020. An attorney and fourth-generation Harris County native, Hollins will be responsible for administering the July runoff contest and the general election in November.

Jackson Lee—“The time has come for the individual responsible for Eric’s death to face accountability, and be fired from the New York Police Department. This is the right course of action and should be done for many reasons. First, if our efforts at ensuring greater community police relationships are to have any meaning, then all stakeholders must feel that there is accountability when police officers err. This is one-such occasion where ideals about restorative justice dictate that all stakeholders stand collectively for the officer’s firing. This is the only conclusion given what the video of Eric’s last moments of life shows: the officer who killed Eric was not in fear for his life. Eric was not combative—in fact, the video shows him flailing, begging for his life, telling his apprehender that he could not breathe. My conversations with his mother—whom I know personally—further underscore that this father and grandfather was not a menace to society; rather, he was like the countless other African American men whose life was wrongly taken by law enforcement. It is time for accountability and responsibility and terminating this officer’s employment is the obligation of people who support enhanced police relations. It is time for all parties dealing with law enforcement across the nation to insist on police accountability and integrity. In addition to community-oriented policing as a method of training police, police departments across the nation should work to improve police/community relations as part of a community-oriented policing strategy. And, it is time for the man who took Eric Garner’s life to be fired from his position as an officer on the NYPD and it is time for the Garner family to have peace and justice.”
SECU Foundation Awards $200,000 Grant for UNCF Emergency Student Aid Program
Earlier this month, SECU Foundation announced a $200,000 grant for UNCF (United Negro College Fund) to provide emergency financial assistance for students attending one of the state’s five Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within the University of North Carolina System. The grant will support UNCF’s Emergency Student Aid program to ensure college students impacted by the pandemic or other unexpected hardships remain on track to graduate.
Governor Abbott Announces Grant Funding For Dallas Law Enforcement
Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Homeland Security Grants Division (HSGD) within the Office of the Governor has awarded the City of Dallas more than $1 million dollars in grant funds to be used for personal protective equipment including ballistic helmets and bullet proof vests. The grant comes in the aftermath of the deadly attack on Dallas peace officers last July and is in addition to an earlier grant of $616,000 awarded in November that was also used for equipment and protective gear.

George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, recently named its North Plaza in honor of Roger Wilkins, a former long-time faculty member who died this past March. Angel Cabrera, president of George Mason University, said at the dedication ceremony, “when Roger came to George Mason, few knew much about this fledgling university in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Roger was one of those intellectual pioneers who helped put this university on the map.”
