Mayor's Youth Council 2023-2024 Takes Oath of Service
High school leaders will learn about city government, voice issues impacting communities
Mayor Sylvester Turner administered the oath of office to 20 high school students appointed to the Mayor’s Youth Council at an inauguration ceremony held on September 28 in the City Hall council chambers. In attendance were students’ family members, City officials, and staff. Established in 1998, the MYC provides youth the opportunity to learn about city government, share issues of concern with city officials, and gain civic leadership skills through community service activities. The council is modeled after the elected City Council, with members representing all single-member and at-large districts.

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Allocates $500 Million For Texas Projects
The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers (USACE) has announced more than $509 million in funding for multiple projects in Texas, including flood mitigation and critical work for the Brays and Buffalo Bayous, as well as the Matagorda and Corpus Christi Ship Channels. The funding will also provide resources for extensive studies of the Texas coastline to help make the state more resilient to future storms. This funding allocation is in addition to the disaster relief funding for Texas previously announced by the USACE.

At the start of National Fair Housing Month, Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis on Tuesday strongly advocated for Commissioners Court’s approval of a $15 million investment in federal funds for county officials to purchase over 100 single-family homes for affordable housing. Many of these homes will go into the County’s Community Land Trust for long-term affordability.
UPDATE: CenterPoint Energy Memorial Substation
Our office was informed by CenterPoint Energy that the 5,700 customers who lost power because the Memorial substation, along with a number of key circuits, were inundated with water, should start to see power coming back online today. CenterPoint has constructed a mobile substation as a workaround and will start bringing the first customers back online today.
