HISD lends helping hand for MLK Day of Service and Community Fair

Houston Independent School District’s Community Partnerships and Nutrition Services will partner with UnitedHealth Group and other organizations for a day of service prior to celebrating the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Junior which is recognized nationally every year in January. Class of 2020 Survey: Half of Graduating Seniors Change Plans for After High School Due to COVID-19

Changes Include Delaying Start of College, Working for Money, and Switching Career Plans, According to Research by JA and PMIEF

Roughly half (49%) of Class of 2020 graduating seniors say their plans for after high school have changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new survey by Junior Achievement (JA) and the PMI Educational Foundation (PMIEF). Of those whose plans have changed, more than a third (36%) say they will now work, nearly as many (32%) expect to delay their start date for college, and almost a fifth (16%) changed the career path they wish to pursue. The survey of 1,000 U.S. teens graduating high school in 2020 was conducted by Wakefield Research for JA and PMIEF in support of new educational initiatives by the two organizations.

This program ended with guest lecturers, super producer Dallas Austin and recording artist Sir The Baptist, they both received honorary doctorates in music from TSU on May 6. The last class was held at the National Museum of African American Music and to their surprise, each student received a gold plaque from the RIAA.

100 BIPOC-Owned Small Businesses In Houston Receive $1 Million In Grants From Comcast RISE

More Than 150 Others To Receive A Technology Makeover or Marketing Services

Comcast this week announced it will award $1,000,000 in grants to 100 BIPOC-owned small businesses, which includes Hispanic and Asian American owned businesses among others, in Houston. More than 150 businesses in the area will also receive technology and marketing resources. These recipients are part of nearly 2,500 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected as Comcast RISE awardees since November. Houston was one of five cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia, selected to award $10,000 grants to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses.
