Across Texas, nearly 5.4 million students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through federal programs such as the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, meals eaten at school are the only substantial meals they will receive during the day. School districts are critical players in implementing school food programs – yet some districts are doing better than others in providing breakfast, lunch, and after-school meals to students in need. With nearly 1.3 million food-insecure children in Texas, it is imperative that school districts do a much better job at ensuring our children are consistently getting nutritious meals.

City of Houston Street Rehab Initiative Scheduled in Northshore

Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin would like to make Northshore area residents aware Houston Public Works will begin a street rehabilitation project on Monday, November 8th, beginning on Grand Oaks Drive. The scope of work includes rehabbing the concrete streets of Grand Oaks Drive, Joliet Street, Halifax Street, and Fawn Drive. The cost of the project is $720,000 and is funded through the Dedicated Drainage and Street Renewal Fund. The project is a result of Mayor Turner's Street Rehab Initiative that was launched in September 2020.

Governor Abbott Visits Rio Grande Valley To Receive Briefing On Flooding, Request Federal Disaster Declaration

Governor Greg Abbott today joined local officials and emergency response personnel at the Emergency Operations Center in Edinburg, Texas to receive a briefing, and provide an update, on the ongoing response to recent severe weather and flooding in the Rio Grande Valley. Following the briefing from local officials, the Governor signed an official request for a federal disaster proclamation for Cameron and Hildalgo counties. As damage assessments continue to take place, Governor Abbott will request other types of federal assistance for additional counties.

By law, federal benefits increase when the cost of living rises, as measured by the Department of Labor’s Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).
