TSU Awarded $3.3 Million Grant From the Kellogg Foundation

The Barbara Jordan – Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) was recently awarded a $3.3 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The grant will expand The HBCU Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, a collaborative project involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) formed to address health equity, social inequality and the vulnerability of children and families in the Gulf Coast.

Theater District Houston presents Houston Strong: A Theater District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, beginning at 8 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The evening will include free performances by seven of the Theater District’s resident companies: Alley Theatre, Da Camera of Houston, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts and Theatre Under The Stars. The benefit will be emceed by Emmy Award-winning television personalities Deborah Duncan, host of KHOU 11’s “Great Day Houston,” and Khambrel Marshall, KPRC Local 2 meteorologist and host of “Houston Newsmakers.”

UPDATE: CenterPoint Energy Memorial Substation

Our office was informed by CenterPoint Energy that the 5,700 customers who lost power because the Memorial substation, along with a number of key circuits, were inundated with water, should start to see power coming back online today. CenterPoint has constructed a mobile substation as a workaround and will start bringing the first customers back online today.

Overlay Scheduled for Oak Meadows Neighborhood

Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin is pleased to announce Houston Public Works will be performing an asphalt overlay project in the Oak Meadows subdivision. Construction is scheduled to begin tomorrow, May 15, and is expected to be completed by the middle of July 2020, weather permitting. The project is approximately $1,875,000 and will be paid for using dollars from the Dedicated Drainage and Street Renewal Fund.

Houston Fire Department (HFD) Expands COVID-19 Vaccinations

For the past week frontline-firefight- ers have voluntarily been receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. HFD recently received 3,000 additional vaccines. This week, the HFD will be expanding the distribution opportunity to internal staff. The expansion will include only those that qualify under Phase 1 approved by the CDC/DSHS.
