Blaffer Art Museum Welcomes Pair of Key New Staff Members

Museum Approaches 50th Anniversary in 2023

The Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston welcomes a pair of key new staff members to the organization in September 2022. Erika Mei Chua Holum will be the new Cynthia Woods Mitchell assistant curator, and Antonie C. Evans will be the museum’s new design & digital resources manager. Both will play crucial roles in the Blaffer’s continued development and success, as well as the museum’s ongoing efforts in community outreach and collaboration.

Mayor's Adult Literacy Breakfast and Signature Fundraiser Will Celebrate Honorees

East 101st Street between 3rd and Lexington Avenues will be renamed Cicely Tyson Way in honor of the late, award-winning thespian. The tribute to the late East Harlem native Cicely Tyson will be marked with a street celebration on the very stretch of 101st that she grew up on featuring an unveiling ceremony with a presentation by the Honorable Diana Ayala, New York City Council deputy speaker.

2022 Texas Artist of the Year & Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts

Art League Houston is proud to present, Bitter Waters Sweet, an exhibition of new work by Fort Worth artist Letitia Huckaby, the 2022 Texas Artist of the Year. In her exhibition, Letitia Huckaby explores the legacy of Africatown, the historic community near Mobile, Alabama, that was founded by a group of West African people who were trafficked to the U.S. as slaves shortly before Emancipation, and long after the Atlantic slave trade was banned. The ship that brought them, the Clotilda, was scuttled in Mobile Bay shortly after delivering its cargo in 1860 to conceal its illegal activity. The wreckage was rediscovered in 2018 and is currently the subject of active archaeological research.
