For months, we’ve seen Donald Trump botch the response to COVID-19 and the economic crisis that has followed. Texas is now facing a massive surge in positive COVID-19 cases, with the number of hospitalizations hitting an all-time high. The country, and Texas, are facing multiple crises — yet President Trump continues to demonstrate that he’s not the right leader to address any of them.

The new 116th Congress has more Black participation than ever before. There are 55 members of the Congressional Black Caucus. There are two Black elected officials who chose not to belong – Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina and Congressman William Hurd of Texas. They see the Caucus as a Democratic association and they are Republicans. We wish they would reconsider. It is important that the Caucus is bi-partisan.

Free Virtual Class to be Live-Streamed in Classrooms Nationwide

The NFL and American Heart Association, together with Discovery Education, will host the first-ever AHA-NFL PLAY 60 Challenge Virtual Field Trip (VFT) live from Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 12 PM CT during the NFL Experience Driven by Genesis. The free virtual class will be live-streamed in classrooms across the country, reaching thousands of students. Houston Texans players WHITNEY MERCILUS and CHRISTIAN COVINGTON and the American Heart Association’s MERCEDES CARNETHON, Ph.D. will teach students the science behind cardio and strength exercises that NFL players use to stay fit and active.

Today, the singular bill in the Texas House addressing the alarming mortality rate of Black women giving birth was prevented from being voted on due to a tactical maneuver used by a conservative wing of the Republican Party. HB 2403, authored by Representative Shawn Thierry (D-Houston) would have investigated the causes of why African American women in Texas are dying at three times the rate of other women during or shortly after childbirth.

Waller County Elections Office Denies Rejecting Voter Registrations from Prairie View A&M Students

After concerns spread Tuesday that some college students at Prairie View A&M had their voter registrations rejected, local election officials say that has not happened. Waller County Elections Administrator Christy Eason denies allegations. Eason said there has been confusion about students who live on campus not having the correct address for their precinct listed on their registrations, but she said the county had not mailed students notices about the issue.
