Theater District Houston presents Houston Strong: A Theater District Benefit Honoring Local Heroes on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, beginning at 8 p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theatre. The evening will include free performances by seven of the Theater District’s resident companies: Alley Theatre, Da Camera of Houston, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts and Theatre Under The Stars. The benefit will be emceed by Emmy Award-winning television personalities Deborah Duncan, host of KHOU 11’s “Great Day Houston,” and Khambrel Marshall, KPRC Local 2 meteorologist and host of “Houston Newsmakers.”

I once read that in the 1950s a professor at a major state university was fired when an interview in the student newspaper quoted him as saying that it would be a good idea for students to live together before getting married. In the 21st century, cohabitation before marriage has become normative, with about 70% of couples moving in together before they marry. It is accepted by most people as axiomatic that moving in before marriage is an important way to test the relationship.

He does not know where to turn for help.

Houston ISD is getting an early start to the MLK holiday. The district held its 27th annual MLK Oratory Speech Competition on Friday. Twelve fourth and fifth grade students from different elementary schools across the district presented three-to-five minute speeches. Houston Health Department reports syphilis outbreak, begins rapid community outreach response

Rise in cases among women, congenital syphilis attributed to outbreak

The Houston Health Department is reporting a syphilis outbreak responsible for a 128 percent increase in cases among women and a nine-fold rise in congenital syphilis in Houston and Harris County. The department will launch a rapid outreach response that includes increasing screening opportunities, targeting hotspots and mobilizing community partners to curb new infections.

UPDATE: CenterPoint Energy Memorial Substation

Our office was informed by CenterPoint Energy that the 5,700 customers who lost power because the Memorial substation, along with a number of key circuits, were inundated with water, should start to see power coming back online today. CenterPoint has constructed a mobile substation as a workaround and will start bringing the first customers back online today.
