HISD lends helping hand for MLK Day of Service and Community Fair
Houston Independent School District’s Community Partnerships and Nutrition Services will partner with UnitedHealth Group and other organizations for a day of service prior to celebrating the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Junior which is recognized nationally every year in January. This free event will kick off with the cleanup of a local community garden followed by a food distribution. Families will also be able to take part in fifteen resource vendors that will be on hand to provide free services.
HISD students to share their 2022 vision of MLK’s dream during 27th annual Oratory competition
Houston Independent School District top 12 student finalists will showcase their public speaking skills at the final round of the 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory competition. Fourth and fifth grade students will present their composed 3-to-5-minute speeches addressing this year’s topic “What would Dr. King say to us today about hope for tomorrow?”

Otis Redding Foundation Releases Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Available Today
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, the Otis Redding Foundation is releasing a new song, “Show Love,” written and produced by students ages 12-18, who attended the Otis Music Camp at the height of the pandemic in 2020. The song is based on a sermon “Loving Your Enemies” which Dr. King delivered at Dexter Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL on November 17, 1957, and includes a live excerpt of the sermon. Dexter Baptist Church is a designated a historic landmark and boasts significant African American history since its opening in 1887. Much of Montgomery’s early civil rights activity, most famously the 1956 Bus Boycott, was directed by Dr. King from his office in the lower level of the church.
