Architectural Gem Restored in Houston's Historic's Fifth Ward
Parra Design Group rejuvenates a mid-century modern masterpiece at 2316 Harlem
Camilo Parra, principal of Parra Design Group headquartered in Houston’s Fifth Ward, discovered a neglected, yet distinctive home in the neighborhood at 2316 Harlem Street. Parra felt the structure embraced Usonian ideals championed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The home is built around a courtyard and features oversized windows, a carport, and an overhanging roof. Research revealed that the house may have been designed by African American architect John S. Chase, but this can’t be verified. Parra committed to restore this treasure to its full luster and offer it for sale.
The Health Museum to Provide Free Admission on Saturday September 21 for National Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
On Saturday, September 21, 2019, The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science – Houston’s first Smithsonian Affiliate museum – will provide free admission to Houstonians who present a Museum Day ticket. The Greater East End Management District's (GEEMD) Graffiti Abatement Program has a new state- of-the-art machine for removal of graffiti and tagging on commercial properties. The new equipment saves time and operating costs leading to greater efficiency and more sites treated. According to Martin Chavez, Director of Constituent Services and Public Safety at GEEMD, "The new technology allows us to remove graffiti in a fraction of the time compared to the old way. To illustrate, at one location that would have taken 14 man hours, we removed the vandalism in one hour."
