Remembering the Life of Eric Hoffman Lawson

Born in St. Louis on July 15, 1959, Eric Hoffman Lawson is the third child and only son of Audrey Hoffman Lawson and William Alexander Lawson. While Eric was a toddler, his parents and eleven others founded Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in the family living room. Like his siblings, young Eric was baptized by his father and began a lifelong membership at Wheeler Avenue. He was a member of the Chapel Choir, Communications Corps, and Boy Scout Troup 242, becoming an Eagle Scout at the age of fourteen.

The NAACP announced today that, with support from Baxter International Inc., it is launching a series of town hall events in communities across the country to improve knowledge about kidney disease and dialysis treatment options for African Americans. Baxter’s support will enable the project to bring needed information about prevention and treatment of kidney disease to African Americans, whose rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) continue to rise at alarming rates.

Houston Homeownership to Get $6.1 Million Boost

Wells Fargo & Company, NeighborWorks® America and its local network members today announced the NeighborhoodLIFT® program will expand for Houston with a $6.1 million commitment by Wells Fargo to boost local homeownership. The Texas Coalition of Black Democrats today joined eighteen elected state Democratic officials from Harris County and the Houston Branch of the N.A.A.C.P. in requesting that Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg and County Attorney Vince Ryan investigate the presence of a phantom candidate in the March 3rd Democratic Primary for House District 142, including empaneling a grand jury to do so, if needed.

44th Annual Jazz & Poetry Black History Celebration

Jazz & Poetry, Houston’s premier Educational Outreach Program dedicated to introducing and inspiring school aged youth through poetry and Jazz performances- celebrating Black History Month, will close out its 44th season at Parker Elementary school this Wednesday, February 22. The 45-minute performance is scheduled to begin at 8:15 A.M. and will delight hundreds of students. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Welcomes Nearly 20,000 Members to Houston July 6-12 for Biennial Conference

Nearly 20,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® (AKA) – from all over the world – will converge on Houston from July 6-12 for its biennial conference. Led by International President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, L.H.D., attendees will engage in service projects as well as leadership training and development. The conference will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center (GRBCC), as well as several hotels. Members from as far away as Germany, Japan, South Korea, Liberia, South Africa and the Middle East are expected to attend.
