The Xi Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® (AKA) hosted a New Member Celebration on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at the Hilton Americas-Houston, where forty-seven (47) professional women were introduced to nearly 800 Houston community members, family, and friends. Very special guests in attendance included Dr. Mattelia B. Grays, AKA 18th International President, Ms. Faye B. Bryant, AKA 21st International President, Dr. Polly Sparks-Turner, 20th AKA South Central Regional Director, and Mrs. Gwendolyn Brinkley, 23rd AKA South Central Regional Director. Several AKA Houston Metropolitan Area Chapter Presidents and Leadership also attended the celebration, along with several elected officials, including the Honorable Angela Graves-Harrington, Judge, Harris County 246th Family District Court and the Honorable Toria J. Finch, Judge, Harris County Criminal Court-at-Law No. 9, who are both members of Xi Alpha Omega. Former Xi Alpha Omega Chapter President, Ms. Pamela McGee, served as Chairman of the New Member Celebration Luncheon Committee.

Professor of Art at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) for 47 years and Project Row Houses Co-Founder Floyd Newsum is presenting his first large-scale retrospective, Evolution of Sight, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art in Madison, Wisconsin, from May 20 through October 8, 2023. The exhibition is organized by guest curators Dr. Lauren Cross, Gail-Oxford Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts at The Huntington in San Marino, California, and Mark Cervenka, UHD Professor of Art and O’Kane Gallery Director.

New report examining civic health issues in Greater Houston also finds naturalized citizens are less likely to discuss politics and register to vote

Just more than half of Hispanic voting-age citizens in the Houston metropolitan area are registered to vote, according to a new report on civic health from the Center for Local Elections in American Politics at Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research and the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC). This number is far below the percentage of voting-age white and African-American citizens in the region who are registered; both of these groups have a voter registration rate of nearly 70 percent.
