Mayor Turner, UH Announce Historic African American Classical Music Festival
Mayor Sylvester Turner along with the University Of Houston and HEB have joined together to present the first-ever all black classical musical festival in the city. The Colour of Music Festival is scheduled to run from September 12 through the 16th at the UH Dudley Recital Hall. The Festival will feature full classical performances in organ, piano, vocal, chamber and orchestral works.

Lynn Redden, the superintendent of Onalaska school district, though he was commenting privately on a Houston Chronicle website about blaming Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson for losing the game Sunday, Yahoo Sports reported.

Tom Arnold files police report against Mark Burnett for battery
Actor Tom Arnold is accusing reality producer and MGM Television Chairman Mark Burnett of attacking him at a pre-Emmys party Sunday night. Arnold filed a police report for battery on Monday morning, LAPD Officer Jeff Lee told CNN. Arnold also sent CNN's Sara Sidner a text about the alleged altercation, writing of Burnett, "He's a psycho."

Opara and Veisha Godfrey-Phelps have been named 2018 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars by The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (WHIHBCU)—a student recognition program which honors outstanding students for their academic merit, campus leadership, civic engagement and entrepreneurial spirit and empowers them to be advocates for excellence and competitiveness. As HBCU Competitiveness Scholars, both Opara and Godfrey-Phelps will attend the 2018 National HBCU Week Conference on September 16-19, 2018 in Washington, D.C. and be publicly acknowledged during the recognition ceremony on Monday, September 17. Both students will also receive an acknowledgment certificate signed by the Mr. Johnathan Holifield, WHIHBCU executive director.

Artist Invites Citizens to Examine Capital Punishment in Texas On October 10
San Antonio artist Mark Menjivar has been engaged in projects looking at capital punishment in Texas from diverse perspectives for over five years. For Open Letters, Menjivar has invited prisoners on Texas’ death row to write letters to the public about their experiences and the trauma they and their families have experienced post-conviction.
