The University of Houston has received a $100,000 gift from the Cullen Trust for Higher Education to aid University students and members of the community who are in immediate need of food assistance. The gift supports efforts at UH and the Houston Food Bank to raise awareness on the growing issue of food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston partners with Comcast to equip Clubs with Wi-Fi-connected “Lift Zones”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston and Comcast have joined forces to equip 10 of the nonprofit’s Clubs in the Houston area, and its headquarters, with Wi-Fi connected “Lift Zones” to enable children and teens to fully participate in educational opportunities and the digital economy. Comcast is providing robust Wi-Fi hotspots in safe spaces designed to help lower income students get online, participate in distance learning and do their homework. Installation began last week.

Houston … Mission Is a ‘Go’ Space Center Houston’s Crowdfunder Rockets Past Goal

Generous people around the world supported Space Center Houston’s mission to help restore NASA’s Historic Mission Control. The nonprofit’s first-ever crowdfunding campaign, "Webster Challenge: Restore Historic Mission Control,” more than doubled its initial Kickstarter goal and rocketed past the city of Webster matching funds to raise nearly $507,000. In total, $5 million is needed to restore and sustain this iconic area and, thanks to this successful campaign, Space Center Houston has raised more than $4 million toward that goal.

Late Game Collapse

OKC uses late game run to defeat the Rockets 117-114 to even the series

For the second game in a row the Houston Rockets (2-2) have been good, but just not good enough to finish. After losing Game 3 on Saturday in overtime due to the inefficiency to slow down big runs by the Oklahoma City Thunder (2-2) at the end of quarters, the Rockets let it happen again in Game 4. OKC used a 22-7 run at the end of the third quarter to erase a Houston 15-point lead and would go on to defeat Houston by a score of 117-114 to even the series at two games apiece.

Today, the Houston Texans are announcing a multi-year partnership with Grammy award-winning musician, two-time New York Times best-selling author, executive producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and Houston resident Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, his premium wine and spirits company Sire Spirits LLC and his charitable arm the G-Unity Foundation. In her exhibition, Letitia Huckaby explores the legacy of Africatown, the historic community near Mobile, Alabama, that was founded by a group of West African people who were trafficked to the U.S. as slaves shortly before Emancipation, and long after the Atlantic slave trade was banned.

The ship that brought them, the Clotilda, was scuttled in Mobile Bay shortly after delivering its cargo in 1860 to conceal its illegal activity. The wreckage was rediscovered in 2018 and is currently the subject of active archaeological research.
