HHSC Encourages Screenings During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Aware- ness Month and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is encouraging women to get screened regularly for the disease. “Breast cancer screenings can save a woman’s life and mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat,” said Rob Ries, HHS deputy executive commissioner for Family Health Services. “As we bring awareness to this issue, we’re urging women to make time for their health and to get screened regularly.”

Teach for America Receives Three-Year Americorps Grant From OneStar Foundation

Grant Will Help Recruit and Develop Leaders Working for Educational Equity throughout Texas

OneStar Foundation recently announced that it has awarded $550,000 in funding to support Teach For America’s programs in Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio over the next three years. This grant is part of $32.7 million that Texas received in federal AmeriCorps funding from AmeriCorps, formerly known as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).

TWC Continues Support for Expansion of Quality Child Care Providers in Texas

Last week, the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) approved $627.5 million in fundingPDF to support the addition and expansion of child care providers statewide, as well as assist TWC’s Child Care Services (CCS) providers as they transition to the new requirement to participate in TWC’s quality-rating improvement system, Texas Rising Star. The new funding supports four major efforts: increasing the child care expansion grants; allocating additional stimulus funding to aid CCS providers; aligning child care payments for families receiving assistance to reflect private pay methods; and enhancing online platforms for career development for early childhood educators.
