Space Center Houston Breaks All-time Attendance Record

The nonprofit Space Center Houston, the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Certified Autism Center, has welcomed more than 1.1 million visitors to date, marking its highest annual attendance since opening in 1992. This milestone comes with one month to go in the year and just as the center is offering a new holiday tradition, Space Center Houston’s Galaxy Lights, presented by Reliant.

High School State Honoree: Zane Magee Nominated by Montgomery High School in Montgomery

Zane Magee, 17, of Montgomery and Caroline Wells, 14, of Tyler today were named Texas' top two youth volunteers of 2018 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. As State Honorees, Zane and Caroline each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in late April to Washington, D.C., where they will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 students will be named America’s top youth volunteers of 2018.

Black History & The Education Of Hidden Figures

At schools across the country, the vibrancy of February is all the same. There are the morning announcements, with school wide events announced; birthdays lauded, teachers and school teams having imaginary flowers thrown on their name. Then comes the obligatory read out of a Black History Month figure. Some students roll their eyes of boredom, others, too disinterested to care. Yet there is one student, his or her ears perked up, waiting to feed into someone new. They’re anticipating a new fact, a new lesson, a new hero to look upon.

Freeway Manor Area Street Sealing Scheduled

Juneteenth with Epic and Lucille's 1913

Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) and Lucille’s 1913 are collaborating to feed Houstonians in need, as EPC celebrates 149 years of hosting Houston’s annual Juneteenth celebration. The organizations will supply meals for 2,000 Houstonians and the event is made possible by Lucille’s 1913, H-E-B, Coca-Cola, Reliant, Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz and the Houston Food Bank.

Gospel music was her introduction to music at an early age choir at Good Samaritan Baptist in Fifth Ward and prevalent today as choir director at St Phillip Missionary Baptist Church.
