The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) has stepped up to support Nora's Home, Houston's haven for organ failure and transplant patients receiving care in the Texas Medical Center, by providing furniture, fixtures and equipment for its recently announced facility expansion. The expansion will double the existing lodging capacity to include 16 additional guest rooms, which will allow the home to provide an additional 10,800 lodging nights per year to organ transplant patients and their families.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $15,000 to support Gemini Ink’s Creative Writing Classes programming and the annual summer Writers Conference. The NEA received 1,728 Art Works applications and will make 1,029 grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.

The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19ththat the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863.
