The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) in Houston is seeking innovative proposals for the prestigious Our Town grant program, administered by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). This grant aims to integrate arts, culture, and design into community development strategies, enhancing local economies, physical spaces, and social outcomes. By fostering creative placemaking, these projects contribute to the transformation of communities into vibrant, resilient hubs centered around the arts.
About the Our Town Grant
The Our Town grant is designed to support projects that forge meaningful collaborations between non-profit organizations and local government entities, with at least one partner being a cultural organization. Grants range from $25,000 to $100,000, requiring a minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount. These projects can span various activities, including:
- Artist Residencies: Embedding artists within communities to foster cultural engagement.
- Arts Festivals: Celebrating local art and culture through community events.
- Public Art: Creating murals, sculptures, and other artworks in public spaces.
- Cultural Planning: Developing strategic plans to enhance cultural assets and infrastructure.
- Creative Asset Mapping: Identifying and leveraging local cultural resources.
- Public Space Design: Transforming community spaces with innovative design.
- Professional Artist Development: Supporting the growth and development of local artists.
Call for Proposals
MOCA Director Necole S. Irvin emphasizes the dual role of art as an economic driver and a cornerstone of community resilience. "We seek to endorse the best ideas from the city’s creative sector that will continue to advance the vitality of neighborhoods, including their rich cultures," she stated.
To be eligible for endorsement, applicants must submit their project concepts by June 20, 2024. Proposals should include confirmed artists and partners, a proposed budget, project location, and alignment with city goals, particularly those related to the City’s Resilience Plan and public safety initiatives. Applications demonstrating strong community impact and innovative approaches to placemaking will be prioritized for endorsement.
