Texas Southern University has made a strategic hire with both numbers and people in mind, appointing Dr. Juan M. Alexander Sr. as Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Services. Alexander officially began July 19, stepping into a role that places him at the center of how TSU recruits students, helps families navigate financial aid, strengthens retention and turns acceptance letters into graduation-day success stories.
That is no small assignment at a university with a very large legacy.
Founded in 1927 as Houston Colored Junior College, Texas Southern grew from classes held at Jack Yates High School into one of the nation’s most consequential historically Black universities. Its story includes the struggle for educational access during segregation, the establishment of a state-supported university in 1947 and the student-led push that helped secure the name Texas Southern University in 1951. Nearly a century later, TSU continues to educate more than 8,700 students while carrying Houston’s history—and its future—across the same campus.
For generations of Houston families, TSU has represented more than a college choice. It has been a gateway into law, pharmacy, business, public service, communications, science and community leadership. That makes enrollment management more than a numbers game. Each application can represent a family’s first encounter with higher education, a career-changing second chance or the continuation of a proud Tiger tradition.
Alexander arrives with nearly two decades of experience in enrollment management, student success and institutional transformation, much of it earned at HBCUs. Most recently, he served as Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management at Florida A&M University, where he helped lead initiatives credited with record application growth while protecting academic standards. His work also included streamlining processes designed to make the student experience more efficient—because college paperwork should not feel like a second major.
“Texas Southern has a rich history and is on an upward trajectory that I’m excited to now be a part of,” Alexander said. “I look forward to developing the team and the strategies that will build upon the work that’s been done to recruit the outstanding students who call Texas Southern home today.”
His new portfolio is broad and consequential. Alexander will serve as TSU’s chief enrollment strategist, overseeing admissions operations, financial aid, recruitment, strategic enrollment marketing and retention. In practical terms, he will help shape the entire student journey—from the first campus inquiry to the moment a Tiger crosses the commencement stage.
The appointment arrives during a season of visible momentum. TSU recently announced a comprehensive campus master plan, reported a $1.6 billion annual regional economic impact and celebrated the largest graduating class in its institutional history during spring 2026. Enrollment leadership will be essential to converting that momentum into sustainable growth, stronger persistence and deeper student support.
Chief Administration Officer and Senior Vice President Dr. Rodney Smith offered a ringing endorsement: “Every university along Dr. Alexander’s journey is better today because he was there.” Smith added that TSU is confident Alexander will help the institution reach both its immediate and long-term enrollment goals.
Alexander’s professional journey also includes leadership roles at Old Dominion University, Alabama A&M University and Norfolk State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and a Master of Education from Norfolk State, followed by a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Creighton University.
For Texas Southern, the hire is more than filling an executive office. It is an investment in access, belonging and completion. Enrollment strategy may begin with data dashboards, but its real measure is human: more students finding TSU, choosing TSU, staying at TSU and graduating ready to lead.
The newest Tiger in the administration already understands the assignment. Now comes the work—and, judging by his record, the numbers may soon start roaring.
