Combination Therapy Targets Genetic Mutation Found in Many Cancers

In vitro/in vivo study shows potential for clinical investigation of PARP and MEK inhibitors for treatment of RAS-mutant cancers

A study at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has shown promise for effective treatment of therapy-resistant cancers caused by a mutation of the RAS gene found in many cancers. The pre-clinical study combined therapies targeting the inhibitors polyADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK). The findings were published this week in Science Translational Medicine.

The Whispers Of Women’s History Month

As we close out Women’s History Month, I take a moment to re- flect not only on all the history that is being made this year alone but also the last 10 years. While I am still in semi-quarantine, I have been binge-watching shows that I absolutely love like The Walking Dead and there is an episode where Eugene (Google him) decides he is going to help fight for the first time and he makes a statement that is quite familiar with many shows like this, he says “ This is what they are going to write about.” That made me think of what I like to call Whisperers of Women’s History.

Free Online Contact Tracing and Case Identification Program Launches in Collaboration with City and County Health Departments

To reduce community spread of COVID-19, the University of Houston College of Medicine today launched a free contact tracing and case identification certificate program for UH students, faculty and staff in collaboration with the Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health. The Epi Corps (Epidemiology Corps) program will prepare a new type of public health worker trained to identify and warn potentially exposed individuals throughout the region.

15 teachers in Harmony Public Schools will receive bonuses this week equaling $145,764 as part of the Texas Educations Agency's Teacher Incentive Allotment, a special fund created to reward the state’s highest-performing teachers. The recognition means that these Harmony teachers are receiving up to nearly $18,000 in additional salary.

New Chief of Houston Police Department: Troy Finner

When outgoing police chief Art Acevedo announced his exit to run the Miami Police Department, Mayor Sylvester Turner knew he wanted his replacement to be someone who was fully capable to step into the role day one. The city needed someone who would be intentional about reducing crime. He could not have a found a more qualified officer to do that other than Troy R. Finner. After Houston City Council unanimously voted in favor Finner as chief, the official swearing-in could take place.

I’m so glad I went to PVU! I’m so glad I went to PVU! Singing glory hallelujah, I went to PVU!! If you’ve ever attended or have otherwise affiliated with a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), then you likely recognize the tune in my intro. Beyond simple recognition, the tune may even evoke a level of nostalgia unparalleled by thoughts of any other period in your life. I know for me, when I think about my alma mater, Prairie View A&M University, my heart swells with pride.
