In 2014, Jamila Barefield heard the words no one ever wants to hear. “You have cancer.” She has just an examination of her colon in 2013 and doctor told her everything looked well. The thing is that the doctors only examine half of Jamila’s colon. He didn’t even look at her other half with cancerous polyps. That might have cured if treated early enough. Sadly, there were not. This began her three-year battle with colon cancer.

The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD) today announced the winners of the 2020 Barbara Jordan Media Awards for media content created in 2019. Established in 1982, the Barbara Jordan Media Awards recognize the respectful, accurate portrayal of people with disabilities by media professionals and students. In response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, GCPD and their partners at the Texas A&M University Department of Communication, Journalism Studies created a virtual awards program honoring the winners and highlighting their outstanding work.

The event, emceed by Great Day Houston host Deborah Duncan and featuring a special performance by Michael Bolton, celebrated UNICEF’s lifesaving work and honored UNICEF Ambassador and actor Angie Harmon with the Spirit of Compassion Award. Since her appointment as a UNICEF Ambassador in 2013, Angie has served as a spokesperson for UNICEF USA’s End Trafficking Initiative and has traveled to Vietnam to bring awareness to UNICEF’s lifesaving programs for children.
