Houston Symphony to Receive $25,000 Grant

National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $25,000 to the Houston Symphony to support the Community-Embedded Musicians (CEM) initiative. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking, and will award 977 grants in this category.

Game to be Broadcast on Bally Sports Southwest for Second Consecutive Year

Lone Star Sports & Entertainment today announced that the 2022 Battle of the Piney Woods presented by H-E-B, featuring the Sam Houston Bearkats and Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks, will kick off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, from NRG Stadium in Houston. For the second consecutive year, a live television broadcast of the game will be provided by Bally Sports Southwest across the network’s four-state footprint, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Governor Abbott Appoints Four To Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists

Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed Becky Johnson and appointed Brandon Stowers and Mark Varhaug to the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists for terms set to expire on February 1, 2023. Additionally, the Governor appointed Drusilla Knight-Villarreal for a term set to expire on February 1, 2019. The board may set reasonable and necessary fees to be charged applicants and license holders, including fees for application, examination, licensure, and renewal of a license. In addition, the board shall base a fee for examination in a discipline of geoscience on the costs associated with preparing, administering, and grading that examination.

‘Street Games’ Competition gives underserved communities equitable access to quality recreation and enrichment programs

About 30 children from two Precinct One community centers will demonstrate so-called street games before Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis and Harris County Street Olympics board members kick off the Summer Games, an Olympic-style competition and enrichment program involving 2,000 youth. During the event, the children will be shown live animals that are part of Precinct One’s Environmental Education Program, which teaches youth about nature and the environment during the Street Olympics Discovery Camp held throughout the summer. The event also will feature youth lighting the Olympic flame that will be extinguished at the Final Event in August.
