RMHC Awards $50,000 to African American High School Seniors
One of our favorite fast food chains known for its signature clown and catchy jingles has been making a huge impact in our local communities in the lives of youth through education. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston and The McDonald’s Owner/Operators Association of Greater Houston once again honored a bevy of high school seniors with academic scholarships at an award ceremony and scholarship luncheon for the 2017 recipients.

Don’t Suffer Alone: STOP Domestic Violence
This time last year domestic violence was on the rise in Houston. Increasing by almost 10%, victims were now trapped in an enclosed space 24/7 with their abuser. No help from family and friends was available as all were practicing being socially distance while quarantining. Although staying at home to stay safe was enacted to keep everyone was safe from catching the coronavirus, it gave abusers the opportunity to take total control over their defenseless victim(s). Through various community partnerships with the city of Houston, a message was sent out to let survivors know that they don’t have to suffer in silence.

25th Annual MFA - 5A Citywide Exhibition
Winners On Display At T.S.U.'s University Museum, Through Aug 30th
This year the African American Art Advisory Association (5A) of the Museum of Fine Art Houston celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Citywide African American Artists Exhibition. The Exhibit will be hosted at different venues and spaces across the city, including the University Museum at Texas Southern University and the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts. The Houston Citywide African American Artists Exhibition is open to all artists of the African diaspora in the greater Houston area. It is sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, through 5A (the African American Art Advisory Association at the MFAH) and the University Museum at Texas Southern University.

The Zina Garrison Tennis and Education Academy a non-profit organization, kicked off a competitive doubles tournament where two pairs “took it to the net” to see who would reign supreme. VIP tents were located at three locations helmed by Hell's Kitchen winners and contestants, Chef Michael Gabriel, Chef Rich Mancini and Chef Bev Lazo. A dinner and auction followed at the home of Philanthropists, Richard and Marty Finger. Author and Celebrity Chef, Jake Smollett, oversaw the EPL foodie experience. Wimbledon champion, Martina Navratilova and Zina Garrison entertained guests along with the Merlot Music of Houston Band featuring vocals from Liz Vaughn. A fierce auction bidding for a portrait by New Orleans' visual artist, filmmaker and activist, Brandan "BMike" Odums took place. There was also be a dedication of Zina Garrison's memorabilia from her 14-year professional career to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History. The Zina Garrison Tennis and Education Academy has taught tennis, health, and fitness to children free of charge for 26 years. ZGA provides 45 weeks of free programming each year for all young people in the Houston area. With tonight’s Game 7 win over the LA Dodgers, the Houston Astros are World Series Champions for the first time in franchise history. Prior to this season, the Astros had gone 55 years without a World Series Championship and had appeared in only one other World Series (2005). The Astros defeated the LA Dodgers by a score of 5-1 tonight at Dodger Stadium.

HISD crowns their 2023 Educators of the year celebrating “A Legacy of Excellence”
The Houston Independent School District hosted their 2023 Educators of the Year at the Hilton Americas-Houston downtown with the theme “A Legacy of Excellence” for the 2022-2023 school year. HISD’s 2022 Elementary Teacher of the Year, Maria Soria and Secondary Teacher of the Year, Kaylin McNary served as this year’s hosts. Attendees were welcomed to a grand banquet space with a 1920s theme and décor accompanied by a 1920s big band for entertainment.

Houston Woman Sentenced to 30 Years for Stabbing Mother at Willowbrook-area apartment
A Houston woman was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder in the stabbing death of her own mother in 2021, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
