Empowering Health For All: Diverse Communities Unite For Positive Change

Last Friday, Hope Clinic, a non- profit health center dedicated to providing culturally and linguis- tically competent care for Houston’s underserved Asian communities, had the privilege of hosting a conversa- tion with Secretary Xavier Becerra, the U.S. Department Secretary of Health and Human Services. This significant event brought together key figures like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Norman Mitchell, CEO Bee Busy Wellness, and Helen Stagg, Executive Director of Civic Heart, who are all commit- ted to improving community health. During the engaging discus- sion, critical topics such as Medicaid and the importance of renewals were thoroughly explored, alongside on- going efforts to enhance the nation’s health systems. The conversation shed light on how these initiatives directly impact the well-being of individuals and communities.

Mayor Turner asks Houston Companies to Hire Houston Youth

With the March 27 deadline to sign up just around the corner, Mayor Sylvester Turner called on Houston corporations and nonprofits to join his Hire Houston Youth (HHY) summer jobs program. The mayor has set a goal of providing 5,000 jobs for Houston youth this summer. As of today, there are pledges from companies for just 3,000 positions.

Hire Houston Youth Job and Resource Fairs Return

The initiative aims to provide 20,000 jobs to Houston youth

Mayor Sylvester Turner’s annual Hire Houston Youth (HHY) city-wide hiring initiative returns this year featuring an online job board and a series of hiring events to provide 20,000 summer jobs and internships for local youth ages 16 to 24. Positions are available from The City of Houston and 537 diverse employers, including McDonald’s, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Calpine, HP, Amazon, United Airlines, etc. Thanks to the support of the National League of Cities, the program has now placed an added emphasis on STEM related opportunities. Starting immediately, applicants can visit hirehoustonyouth.org to register, access the job board, and find additional resources from local organizations.

Comcast RISE to Award an Additional $1 Million in Grants to Minority-Owned Small Businesses in Houston

100 small businesses owned by people of color will each receive a $10,000 grant

Comcast will again award $1 million to small businesses owned by people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, in Houston. This effort is part of the Comcast RISE Investment Fund program, a multi-year, multi-faceted initiative launched in late 2020 to support small businesses owned by people of color (POC) and provide the resources and tools they need today.
