Despite years of payments, Black student loan balances go up – not down
Over half of federal loan debt held by borrowers with a net worth less than $6,370
With every passing day, urgency grows to cancel the nation’s $1.7 trillion student loan debt. The current federal pause on payments and interest rates will expire on August 31. If no federal action is taken before that date, 15 million borrowers already struggling with the unfortunate combination of unsustainable debt and little or no wealth will face a daunting challenge with no financial relief in sight.

City of Houston Releases Climate Impact Assessment Projecting Future Houston Climate Trends
The City of Houston’s Mayor’s Office released the Houston Climate Impact Assessment, to better illustrate how climate change will impact Houston’s future based on lower and higher scenarios of future climate change. The assessment, conducted by Anne Stoner and Katharine Hayhoe of ATMOS Research & Consulting, studied 25 separate future climate indicators, including the number of days with temperatures above 100 degrees, the number of nights above 80 degrees, total annual precipitation, days with precipitation above 4 inches, and the annual number of dry days.

Helping People and Pets: BARC Houston Receives Mars Petcare Grant
BARC, the City of Houston's Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, is excited to announce that it has received a $20,000 grant from Mars Petcare to support its Healthy Pets Healthy Streets (HPHS) program, which provides free spay/neuter services to owned pets of qualifying Houston residents. As a 2022 BETTER CITIES FOR PETS™ Program Grant recipient, BARC will be able to expand outreach for the Healthy Pets, Healthy Streets initiative through translated program materials and marketing to more pet parents in underserved areas, including Houston's Complete Communities.

**Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Tackle Mail Delivery Delays in Houston** *Washington, D.C.* — In response to growing concerns about persistent mail delivery delays at the North Houston and South Houston Distribution Processing Centers of the United States Postal Service (USPS), Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia took proactive measures to address the issue. On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the dynamic duo convened a crucial meeting with the Inspector General for the USPS. During the meeting, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) disclosed an ongoing audit of the South Houston (Missouri City) Local Processing Center. The audit aims to identify operational challenges contributing to the backlog of packages and delays in mail deliveries. While the Inspector General could not provide immediate solutions to the issues at hand, she expressed genuine concern about customers' reported difficulties in reaching USPS personnel for information. Acknowledging recent staffing challenges across USPS that may be impacting performance at Houston facilities, the Inspector General assured that a comprehensive report with recommendations would be delivered once the audit is complete. The meeting highlighted the commitment of Congressman Al Green and Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia to hold USPS accountable for ensuring reliable and efficient mail delivery services for their constituents. Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia emphasized the importance of constituents' voices and their demand for improved USPS services.
