On September 21, 2017, I hosted the third annual 2nd Chance Job Fair, where we had over 4,000 participants and over 60 vendors post Hurricane Harvey. There were many people who were hired on the spot and those who are scheduled for interviews. I would like to thank the many volunteers who came out and our special guest, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Pastor Suzette Caldwell, Mr. Charles Wolf of Arcadis, our 2nd Chance Speaker Mr. Thomas Jackson, and Houston Legend Scarface. More Than 150 Others To Receive A Technology Makeover or Marketing Services
Comcast this week announced it will award $1,000,000 in grants to 100 BIPOC-owned small businesses, which includes Hispanic and Asian American owned businesses among others, in Houston. More than 150 businesses in the area will also receive technology and marketing resources. These recipients are part of nearly 2,500 entrepreneurs nationwide who have been selected as Comcast RISE awardees since November. Houston was one of five cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia, selected to award $10,000 grants to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses.

Houston area schools continue to lead the way in providing nutritious meals and snacks throughout the school day.
Across Texas, nearly 5.4 million students qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through federal programs such as the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. For many of these children, meals eaten at school are the only substantial meals they will receive during the day. School districts are critical players in implementing school food programs – yet some districts are doing better than others in providing breakfast, lunch, and after-school meals to students in need. With nearly 1.3 million food-insecure children in Texas, it is imperative that school districts do a much better job at ensuring our children are consistently getting nutritious meals.
