February Films Celebrating Black History
Houston First invites the public to join us for Saturday Night Movies on the Plaza at Avenida Houston (in front of Hall C at the George R. Brown Convention Center). Beginning Saturday, February 8, and continuing through the end of the month, the Plaza at Avenida Houston will present outdoor screenings of movies written, directed or featuring prominent African Americans. Screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Houston creatives and others discussing the relevance of the films to black history and America’s broad cultural heritage.

Vanessa Gilmore opens Tea with Judge V in King David Hotel in historic Riverside
Judge, author, and entrepreneur are some ways to describe Judge Gilmore. When she was sworn in as a federal judge in 1994, she was the youngest sitting federal judge in the nation. Popular Texas restaurant, The Breakfast Klub, has replaced a mural of George Floyd on the side of its building with a new painting dubbed the “Black Mount Rushmore.” The mural includes images of Black luminaries who have had significant influence in the advancement of Black people in America and throughout the world. The artwork features Marcus Garvey, Carter G. Woodson, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.

The Houston Texans Surprise Three Local Nonprofits with $10,000 Grants to Help Close the Digital Divide
Earlier today the Houston Texans awarded $10,000 grants to the Chinese Community Center, Urban Enrichment Institute and The Pangea Network through the United Way of Greater Houston to help close the digital divide across the Houston community. The “digital divide” is defined as the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the internet, and those who do not. These grants will assist with providing access to the technology needed to help close this gap and is part of the National Football League’s efforts to close the digital divide in communities across the country.
