Free Virtual Class to be Live-Streamed in Classrooms Nationwide

The NFL and American Heart Association, together with Discovery Education, will host the first-ever AHA-NFL PLAY 60 Challenge Virtual Field Trip (VFT) live from Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 12 PM CT during the NFL Experience Driven by Genesis. The free virtual class will be live-streamed in classrooms across the country, reaching thousands of students. Houston Texans players WHITNEY MERCILUS and CHRISTIAN COVINGTON and the American Heart Association’s MERCEDES CARNETHON, Ph.D. will teach students the science behind cardio and strength exercises that NFL players use to stay fit and active.

380 Harmony Public Schools Teachers Across Houston to Receive More Than $3 Million in Bonuses Through TEA’s Teacher Incentive Allotment

380 teachers in Harmony Public Schools' Houston Districts will receive bonuses this week equaling $3.2 million as part of the Texas Educations Agency's Teacher Incentive Allotment, a special fund created to reward the state’s highest-performing teachers. The recognition means that these Harmony teachers are receiving up to $18,760 in additional salary.

Political Studies & COVID-19

Last Wednesday, the Joint Center hosted an online briefing on accessible vote-by-mail and safe in-person voting for Black communities. The session explored safeguards to ensure an accessible vote-by-mail system that does not dilute Black votes (e.g., prepaid postage, a postmark deadline of Election Day, the ability for third parties to collect and return sealed ballots, and quick notification of and ability to remedy any signature matching issues—see this Brennan Center brief showing vote-by-mail racial disparities without these safeguards). Participants also discussed the need to maintain sanitized and uncrowded in-person polling places for those who choose not to vote-by-mail.
