Hundreds of Students Get Academic Enrichment at AKA ASCEND Summit
The Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) and other Houston area AKA chapters in partnership with The Dow Chemical Company hosted hundreds of high school girls and boys at an ASCEND℠ Summit where students had the opportunity to receive academic enrichment and life skills training to support their journey to college or vocational employment.

New Chief of Houston Police Department: Troy Finner
When outgoing police chief Art Acevedo announced his exit to run the Miami Police Department, Mayor Sylvester Turner knew he wanted his replacement to be someone who was fully capable to step into the role day one. The city needed someone who would be intentional about reducing crime. He could not have a found a more qualified officer to do that other than Troy R. Finner. After Houston City Council unanimously voted in favor Finner as chief, the official swearing-in could take place.

Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans and defensive coordinator Matt Burke had repeatedly watched the Week 16 tape and knew what the Cleveland Browns offense had done to them in the 36-22 blowout game. This grant is part of $32.7 million that Texas received in federal AmeriCorps funding from AmeriCorps, formerly known as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
