Urban Souls Presents: Dancing with the Houston Stars 2023
The 2023 Dancing with the Houston Stars event will showcase 12 Houston influencers, achievers, and leaders ready to trade in their “day jobs” for a fun evening of toe-tapping and eye-brow-raising performances in front of a live audience. The events will occur on October 13, 2023, at Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (MATCH) at 3400 Main St. Houston, TX 77002. Tickets are $50 and are available at www.matchouston.org. This event funds Urban Souls' yearly programming for the Houston community. Organizations combining forces to reduce home fire injuries and death
Volunteers and leaders from the American Red Cross of Greater Houston and the Houston Fire Department (HFD) will be going door-to-door in historic Third Ward this Saturday, July 15, to install free 10-year lithium ion battery smoke alarms and educate residents about fire safety. It marks the first installation in which the Red Cross and HFD are teaming up, with the goal of working together to install 3,000 free smoke alarms in Houston homes over the next 12 months.

The University of Houston has received a $4.5 million gift from the Thomas Michael Panos Family Estate to establish an endowed chair in the Cullen College of Engineering; a scholarship endowment available to students throughout the University; and an endowed lecture series focused on equity and social justice, which will reside in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. An additional $2 million has been matched by the University’s new “$100 Million Challenge” Aspire Fund. This is the first matched gift since the fund was established, making the total impact of the Panos Family Estate gift at least $6.5 million.

New Data Reveals Neighborhoods Impacted By Urban Heat Effect
On August 7, 2020, the Houston Harris Heat Action Team (H3AT)—a collaboration be- tween Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC), the City of Houston, Harris County Public Health (HCPH), and The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) — held a one-day urban heat island mapping effort with the help of 84 community scien- tists, and funding support from Lowe’s and Shell. The effort was part of the 2020 Heat Watch program led by CAPA Strategies and the National Oceanic and At- mospheric Administration (NOAA), and it resulted in a total of 320 square miles of Houston and Harris County being mapped by local residents.
