Today, September 1, 2023, all students in Texas colleges and children in shelters, treatment centers, group homes and on all college campuses are safer. That’s due to two new Texas laws, HB 3553 and 3554. Thanks to anti-trafficking leader Jacquelyn Aluotto, founder of NTZ Inc, The Survivor Leaders who fought for this, Representative Shawn Thierry who sponsored the bills, Senator John Whitmire who carried the bills in the Texas Senate, all bipartisan supporters who voted “Yes!” Ultimately, Governor Abbott believed and signed the bills into law.

Trauma and Grief Training for UHD Social Work Students to Improve Behavioral Health Services for Houston Hispanic Youth
A major shortage in the behavioral health workforce means that many area children and teenagers experiencing trauma and loss—especially in Houston’s Hispanic community—are not getting the personal attention and care they deserve. Thanks to a collaboration between the Trauma and Grief Center at the Hackett Center for Mental Health, the Lucine Center for Trauma and Grief, and the University of Houston Downtown’s (UHD) College of Public Service, that’s about to change.

The annual exhibition of more than 250 original pieces of individual art and creative writings by children touched by cancer and blood disorders is open through September at Texas Children’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in honor of Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

Red Cross Helps those affected by Hurricane Idalia
Hurricane Idalia made landfall yesterday morning in Taylor County, Florida and moved northeast through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. More than 100,000 people are without power from the storm. Currently, Idalia is bringing heavy rainfall and flash flooding to portions of the Carolinas. The Red Cross pre-positioned more than 400 disaster responders and truckloads of supplies to support the communities impacted. Two volunteers from The Texas Gulf Coast Region will be heading to Tallahassee today and tomorrow to help those in need.
