Two Houston-Area Students Graduate from Elite U.S. Navy Summer Flight Academy
While some high school students spent the summer doing odd jobs or hanging out with friends, Sophia Ivchenko, a student at Tomball Memorial High School in Cypress, TX, and Reva Jogdand, a student at Stephen F. Austin High School in Richmond, TX, completed an intensive eight-week U.S. Navy Summer Flight Academy aviation program at Delaware State University, achieving their FAA Private Pilot’s licenses upon completion of the training. The program is taking place from June 12 – August 3.
Racial Profiling, Police Abuse of Power Unacceptable in Georgia, Delaware, or Any State
On April 20, sheriffs’ deputies in Georgia pulled over a bus transporting the women’s lacrosse team from Delaware State University, a historically Black university, and without probable cause brought in drug-sniffing dogs and hand-searched the women’s personal belongings. A memorial service for trailblazing civil rights journalist Simeon Booker will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018, his wife, Carol McCabe Booker, has announced. The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Washington National Cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Booker, a journalistic icon, died Dec. 10 at the age of 99.

The NFL named Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson the AFC Offensive Player of the Month and the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for October. Watson is the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win AFC Offensive Player of the Month and joins Barry Sanders (1989), Edgerrin James (1999), Mike Anderson (2000) and Kareem Hunt (2017) as the only rookies to win the award.

Founders First CDC to Award $100,000 to Minority Businesses Throughout the State to Create and Promote Premium Wage Employment Opportunities in Underserved Communities
Founders First CDC, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers expansion in diverse founder-led, revenue-generating businesses, announces its new Job Creators Quest Grant which will award $100,000 to support minority and underrepresented business owners throughout the state of Texas. The grant opened for submission on August 19, 2021. Thirty grants will be awarded to diverse-led companies located in the north, central or south Texas regions, with a current staff of 2-20 employees and the ability to add 1-2 net new premium wage jobs in the next 12 months. To be eligible, the company’s founder must be Black, indigenous, a person of color, LGBTQIA+, military veteran, woman or located in a low to moderate income area and be a for-profit company with annual revenues between $100,000 to $3 million.
