NAACP Set to Launch Youth Initiative on Black Economic Power in Houston

In efforts to engage Black youth in programming that promotes financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and innovation, The NAACP is launching a 3-day Youth Council Idea Lab in three cities: Aurora, IL; Jacksonville, FL; and Houston, TX. The purpose of this Idea Lab is to help our young members begin to think critically about moving beyond consumerism and producing goods/services that impact their communities. At the end of this 3-day program, participants will create, innovate, and wield their Black Economic Power!

Anytime along a student’s travels through school, difficulties in math can arise for a variety of reasons that might include math-specific and other cognitive problems, lack of motivation, socioeconomic barriers and educational factors. Now with a four-year $2.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, University of Houston associate professor of psychology Paul Cirino is probing the minds of 1,000 Houston Community College students taking developmental or remedial math coursework to find out where the stumbling blocks occur.

The College of Transdisciplinary Studies will assist students to continue their education and complete and earn a baccalaureate degree or master’s degree.
