In Houston Chamber Choir’s third concert of the season, titled By Local, five of these composers are in the spotlight with a diverse program showcasing their immense creative talents. The Houston Chamber Choir will bring its special flair to these pieces. The evening extravaganza will include talks from each of the presenting composers throughout the concert, including Mark Buller, Daniel Knaggs, Pierre Jalbert, Rob Landes and David Ashley White. As an additional treat, patrons will enjoy viewing artwork created by several of Houston’s local visual artists who will display their pieces in a joint gallery exhibition and reception prior to the concert.

After 77 years of educating children in Houston’s Third Ward, St. Peter The Apostle Catholic School is closing its doors. Houston Public Media reports the superintendent over the archdiocese’s schools, Debra Haney, said that a lot of the decision came down to financial pressure. It’s also a reflection of the toll that charter schools have put on not just public schools, but also parochial schools like St. Peter’s.

Houston Symphony to Receive $25,000 Grant
National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $25,000 to the Houston Symphony to support the Community-Embedded Musicians (CEM) initiative. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking, and will award 977 grants in this category.

New Poll Reveals COVID-19’s Impacts on African American Communities
Tomorrow, May 19th at 12:00 pm ET, the African American Research Collaborative (AARC) in partnership with the NAACP and the Equity Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) at Yale School of Medicine will present new polling detailing the impacts of the Coronavirus pandemic on African American communities. Given that COVID-19 is having a disproportionate impact on black Americans across a range of indicators - infection rates, deaths, unemployment, access to care, access to education, etc. - this is the first national poll to take a deep dive into how African Americans are responding.
