Prairie View A&M Awarded $1 Million for African-¬‐American Studies Initiative

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) a grant of $500,000 to support its effort to establish an African-¬‐American Studies Initiative, which will be housed in its Marvin D. and June Samuel Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences.

Over eight thousand people attended the 3rd annual Houston Black Heritage Festival presented by Ebony Magazine. Grammy award winning artist Tamia set the stage on fire alongside Elle Varner, and every girls dream performer the ever so “smooth” Eric Benet. This year’s festival served as an uplifting evening for the city of Houston after the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Eric Benet gracefully gave words of encouragement as he embraced the crowd with resilience and compassion. This years host and emcee was non other than The Session Talk Show Host, Kia Renee!

TSU Awarded $3.3 Million Grant From the Kellogg Foundation

The Barbara Jordan – Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University (TSU) was recently awarded a $3.3 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The grant will expand The HBCU Gulf Coast Equity Consortium, a collaborative project involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) formed to address health equity, social inequality and the vulnerability of children and families in the Gulf Coast.

Council Member Dave Martin's District E Newsletter - July 2017

As we head further into summer, my City Council colleagues and I continue to fight for district projects in the City of Houston's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Since being sworn into office, I continue to see, year after year, the amount of tax dollars for CIP projects allocated inequitably across the 11 council districts. This year's proposed plan, which was given to city council members late last week, shows a total of 7% of all CIP dollars going towards District E, doubling the amount of CIP dollars we received last year. Last year District E only received 3% of the total CIP dollars distributed among Council Districts.
